The Patriot Report

Freedom High School Newsletter #9

January 18, 2026
Dear Patriot Family,

As we head into the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, I want to take a moment to share how proud I am of our students and all they continue to accomplish. Their hard work, leadership, and commitment to excellence are clear across campus, and it’s inspiring to see them doing what it takes to make the third quarter a strong and successful one.
I also want to remind our families of the importance of completing the required steps in Xello. For seniors, finishing all postsecondary pathway tasks is essential as they prepare for life after graduation. Students in grades 9–11 should also be completing their course planners to ensure they are on the right track for next year.

With Patriot Pride,

Charles M. France
Principal, Freedom High School

Academic Excellence: Where Patriots Achieve

Spotlight on Learning: Innovation in Mr. Madhavan’s AP Physics Classroom

In Mr. Madhavan’s physics classes, students aren’t just learning scientific principles; they’re experiencing them. Thanks to equipment and hands‑on project materials funded through a generous Lockheed Martin grant, students are able to explore physics in highly interactive and impactful ways. Through real‑world problem‑solving, dynamic demonstrations, and inquiry‑based investigations, his classroom has become a vibrant hub of curiosity and discovery. Whether students are unraveling the mysteries of motion, experimenting with energy, or diving into the complexities of waves and forces, they’re gaining a deeper understanding of how physics shapes the world around us. This month, we’re excited to highlight the outstanding learning opportunities his students are engaging in and the excitement building around science on campus.
Two young men stand in a classroom with lab tables and shelves filled with supplies.
An AP Physics student showcases our Atmospheric Pressure Demonstrator, equipment generously funded by Lockheed Martin through the OCPS Teacher Impact Grant. Although we rarely think about the weight of the air surrounding us, students are consistently astonished by the incredible force atmospheric pressure can exert. In this demonstration, air is removed from beneath a rubber sheet, allowing the greater pressure above it to lift an entire chair. Hands‑on experiences like this turn abstract concepts into memorable, eye‑opening moments of discovery for our students.
Three students in a classroom setting, one sitting on a spinning platform with an orange device.
Friction and air resistance often make it challenging for students to fully grasp Newton’s laws of motion. While many eventually accept the idea of translational inertia, understanding rotational inertia requires an even greater conceptual leap. In this demonstration, an AP Physics student uses a hovercraft, funded by Lockheed Martin through the OCPS Teacher Impact Grant, to explore rotational inertia in action. Once set spinning, the hovercraft continues rotating far longer than students expect, providing a vivid and tactile illustration of how rotational inertia works.
Three students work together at a science lab table, engaged in a hands-on activity.
With their broader and more advanced understanding of physics, AP Physics C students are uniquely equipped to support AP Physics 1 learners as they tackle foundational concepts and hands‑on challenges. In this photo, a senior AP Physics C student works alongside AP Physics 1 students as they construct a mousetrap car, offering guidance, encouragement, and expertise. These collaborative moments strengthen learning for everyone involved and help build a community of scientists in our classrooms.
Students and an instructor collaborate around a table with papers and a calculator.
AP Physics 1 students worked together this week to complete corrections on their Torque unit assessment, strengthening their understanding of one of the most important ideas in rotational motion: torque is to rotation what force is to translation. By discussing problems in small groups, students deepened their grasp of how torque causes objects to rotate faster or slower, just as force changes an object’s linear motion. These collaborative sessions not only reinforce essential concepts but also build confidence as students help one another master the fundamentals of rotational dynamics.

Exploring the Realities of Infant Care in Early Childhood Education

Students in our Early Childhood Education classes are diving into a hands‑on exploration of what it truly takes, both in procedures and cost, to raise an infant. As part of their upcoming infant‑care simulation, each student will be assigned a baby doll designed to mirror the weight and basic needs of a real baby.
To kick off the experience, Ms. Longstaff's students participated in a fun “baby gender reveal,” selecting cupcakes that revealed whether they would be caring for a boy or a girl. Leading up to receiving their baby dolls, students have been actively researching essential caregiving skills, from feeding and bathing to sleep routines and safety considerations.
This thoughtful preparation ensures students are not only engaged and excited, but also building a realistic understanding of the responsibilities involved in infant care, an invaluable foundation for those pursuing careers in early childhood development and in real life.

AI‑Powered Learning in Coach Pennington’s Classroom

Coach Pennington’s students are diving deeper into critical thinking this week by using AI tools with Khanmigo to compare multiple arguments on the same topic. Through this activity, students evaluate how different perspectives are constructed, supported, and communicated, strengthening both their understanding of the content and their ability to analyze rhetoric.
By examining tone, evidence, logic, and structure, students learn to identify what makes an argument compelling and credible. This innovative use of AI not only boosts analytical skills but also prepares students to engage thoughtfully with complex ideas in their academic work and beyond.

Xello -Course Planner and Postsecondary Planning

Parents and students, please take a moment to review the steps needed to complete each student’s Xello account. Xello is an essential tool that helps students track their academic journey throughout high school and prepare for their postsecondary plans, whether college, career, or military pathways.
Please refer to the ParentSquare message sent on January 16 for a full description of Xello, and don’t forget to review the helpful links and videos included below for more helpful resources.

Students will attend a grade‑level Xello Assembly on Tuesday, January 20. Students will learn how to use Xello to make their course selections, and we will guide them in choosing accurate available options.
Students should report to each of their classes first; announcements will be made when it is time to move to the PAC.
Assembly Schedule:
  • Juniors: Called during 4th period
  • Sophomores: Called during 6th period
  • Freshmen: Called during 7th period
Please keep in mind that Xello is a new program for OCPS. While we are excited about its features, we are still working through a few initial challenges and will share updates as the process continues.
Thank you for supporting your student as he or she prepares for the 2026-2027 school year.

United as Patriots: Celebrating Spirit, Building Connections!

Students and teachers unite weekly for fun activities that build pride and a strong sense of belonging

Another Successful Freedom Friday!

Freedom High School celebrated another exciting Freedom Friday, where clubs across campus came together to host a variety of fun and engaging activities for students during both A and B lunch. Each club that signed up brought something unique, giving students plenty of opportunities to connect, create, and explore new interests.
This past Friday, students got hands‑on with art by creating personalized vision boards, learned fascinating facts about countries around the world, showcased their basketball skills in a friendly shooting challenge, and tested their focus and balance while trying to keep a block tower from tumbling down.
Freedom Fridays continue to build community, spark creativity, and provide a positive, spirited break in the school day. Thanks to the enthusiasm of our students and clubs!

Be Present, Be Ready, Be a Patriot!

Consistent, on-time attendance is the single most important factor in your student's academic achievement. Every day at school offers crucial learning and social opportunities that cannot be fully replicated, and missing even a few days can significantly impact progress. We ask all families to prioritize regular attendance to ensure your student is present and engaged. Please familiarize yourself with our Attendance Policy for guidelines regarding excused absences and tardiness. Your partnership in making every school day count is key to a successful year!
