Parents, please take the time to discuss your child's academic progress. Please contact your child's teacher as well if a conversation needs to take place as to how we can assist, perhaps via tutoring opportunities or amnesty days. A parent-teacher conference can also happen. Just call our student services department and they will be happy to assist.

She Kills Monsters
I would like to congratulate our performing arts department for once again putting on a very successful and entertaining fall play, She Kills Monsters. I am proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing the spring musical, Freaky Friday.

I continually look forward to doing "whatever it takes" alongside our students, faculty, staff, families, and community to enrich our founding principles of honor, excellence, and tradition throughout the 2019-2020 school year.

Ms. Neely with Ms. Angilyn Watson

Ms. Neely with Mr. Christopher Perez

Congratulations to FHS teachers, Ms. Angilyn Watson and Mr. Christopher Perez for winning the Foundation for OCPS Arts Teacher Impact Grants. Backed by some of the community's major corporate education supporters, the Foundation supports creative learning initiatives in the classroom and has awarded over $3 million to over 5,000 Orange County Public School teachers. Ms. Watson, who teachers art at FHS, will use the grant money to purchase art supplies while Mr. Perez, who teaches guitar, will use his funds to purchase new guitar strings.

Project Lead the Way

In observation of National Manufacturing (MFG) Month, High School High Tech (HSHT) and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) students visited the Dusobox packaging company in Orlando, Florida, yesterday. Dusobox is a privately held family business since 1951. Today, it continues to operate under the leadership of the Kelley Family. With roots in manufacturing of corrugated boxes first in Boston, Dusobox is now located in Central Florida. Students toured their administrative and operational areas as well as constructed a costumed castle that was manufactured at Dusobox. This was a great opportunity for students to gain insight in corrugated packaging displays and how it relates to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the field of manufacturing.

Rigor in the Classroom
AP Human Geography with Mr. Panzano

Rigor in the classroom is displayed in Mr. Matthew Panzano's AP Human Geography classes as his students participated in an interactive, real world activity. The students were given an interactive story of an actual refugee. As a team, they had to make the same choices that these refugees have had to make in terms of where to go and how to get there. Students had to activate prior knowledge of economics and global population sizes in order to determine their path for each scenario.

Community footnote: The Northwestern University Wildcats (Evanston, IL) 34-game losing streak is the longest in Division I college football history. During the team's winless 1981 season, the Wildcats were outscored 505-82 - an average of 40 points per game. What many do not know is that Northwestern University is consistently ranked among the Top 10 U.S. colleges by any ranking service year after year. During this losing streak at home football games their students would hold up signs in the stands with this simple message:
"That's okay, y'all be working for us one day."

The Northwestern University art library on their Evanston campus near Chicago

The point? Getting a quality education was #1 and the Northwestern students understood that. Freedom offers this opportunity to all of our students and they are encouraged to take advantage of each and every school day.

Monday's Motivational Moment!
INSIDE OUT

Most people approach success from the outside in. But to achieve real success, you have to do it from the inside out. Focus on your character, and you whole life improves. Changes in character bring substance and power, while external improvements are merely cosmetic and quickly fade away.

"Faced with crisis
the individual of character falls
back on themself."
~ Charles De Gaulle
