 Welcome to Freedom High School where learning is our top priority and our focus is on literacy, rigor and relationships. Our school's pillars of honor, excellence and tradition continue to be on display on a daily basis by our students, staff, and community.
Happy New Year and welcome to the second semester of the
2019-20 school year! For our seniors, this is a bittersweet time for them as they begin to close a chapter in their lives. I cannot wait to shake their hands and give them their diplomas as they walk across the graduation stage at Amway Arena on May 20. Please encourage your senior to stay focused, finish strong, and participate in the end of year senior activities. (See the senior calendar section below for important dates and events.)
First semester report cards will be distributed Tuesday, January 21 during your child's fourth period class. Please have meaningful and productive conversations regarding your child's academic progress.
Also, feel free to email or contact any teacher should you have any questions or concerns. If you would like to schedule a parent-teacher conference, you may do so by contacting our student services department.
I hope you are enjoying the three-day weekend as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday, January 21.

Teacher IMPACT grant for Agriculture Science students

Check out this beautiful green learning area at Freedom. Mr. Zane Fessler's agriculture science students constructed raised planter beds, chose and cared for their plants, and now the vegetables are perfectly grown and ready for harvest. The funding for the wood, tools, maintenance equipment, seeds and picnic table was made possible form a Teacher IMPACT grant from Duke Energy.

FHS would like to recognize and thank our School Resource Officers (SR0),
Master Deputy Philip Engstrom and
Deputy Shawn Randall. Master Deputy Engstrom is in his third year at FHS. He started his law enforcement career 21 years ago in Baltimore. He moved to central Florida 16 years ago and has been with the OCSD since. This is Deputy Randall's fourth year in law enforcement and first at FHS. She attended Evans High School and graduated from Central Florida Prep.

Rigor is displayed on a field trip to Universal Orlando. Recognized as an Outstanding Educator,
Mr. Michael Hellmund shared the award from Universal with his aerospace and physics students. The behind the scenes field trip provided a unique look at the science used in developing a theme park ride. Then he and the students got to experience it.

Wrestling
The Freedom boys' and girls' wrestling teams continued their dominance last week! The boys' team won the District Dual Championships giving them the right to host the first two rounds of the state series. The girls' team placed 2nd at the Lady Panther Invitational with three individual champions and six overall place finishers.

OCPS Parent Academy

"Together Toward Tomorrow" is the first OCPS Parent Academy focused solely on middle and high school families. Workshops center on college-readiness, tips for struggling learners, transition tools, wellness, financial literacy and more. Representatives from colleges and universities, OCPS magnet schools, OCPS teams and community organizations will distribute information during the event's exhibit hall -
Workshop and Exhibit Hall Line-Up. The event is free.
A light breakfast and a boxed lunch will be provided. Date: Saturday, January 25, 2020, from 9am-1pm.

Monday's Motivational Moment!

HIDDEN VALUE
She was old and tired. Having lived in her home on the outskirts of Paris for many decades, it was time to sell her home and its possessions in order to pay her bills and find a smaller place to live out her final years. Not knowing where to start she contacted a Paris auctioneer company to evaluate the home and its contents before putting the home up for sale, which is customary in France. However, one item stood out. On the wall was a painting on wood that she thought might be worth a few hundred dollars, so she took it to a local auction house. What happened next is from a fairy tale!
It was a piece called "Christ Mocked," a work by Cimabue, a 13th-century Italian painter and one of around 10 pieces that can be attributed to Cimabue, considered the father of modern painting. The painting depicts a Christ-like figure cloaked in dark robes. He's surrounded by a group of men who look like they're pestering him. A few have swords.
"In the world of art history, this is seriously important," said Xavier Salomon, Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator at the Frick Collection in New York. "He is described in all the sources as the teacher of Giotto and with Giotto is sort of the beginning of European art ... of Western painting, as we think of it," he added. "So, if you think of a 13th-century artist whose name is a sort of mythical name, to be able to find a new, previously undiscovered work by that artist is an unbelievable piece of news."
The work of art went to auction where an "undisclosed buyer" purchased the piece for $26.2 million dollars! The elderly women's financial problems were over, and a masterpiece can be added to the world of art.
The lesson for our Patriots?
Each of us has that special "masterpiece" within us. Maybe it's a hidden talent like Grandma Moses, a simple farm wife who decided to begin something she had always dreamed about, painting. Her works of art now sell for millions of dollars. Each of us has a talent or skill that has been "underutilized." It's not hanging on a kitchen wall, but too often it is hidden in the closet of our minds.
This hidden talent is in the form of a dream in most cases that has never been fulfilled because day-to-day life has gotten in the way and the weeks seem to fly by. So, why not take some time this week to look around your life for hidden treasures (talents) that you've been ignoring? Maybe, just maybe, there is a masterpiece of hidden talent that is ready to be sold to the highest bidder!
Patriots, we just started 2020 and are still early in the second semester. Don't wait any longer!
